ZK: Dear Branko! Te aves baxtalo! We are happy to talk to you today. Please introduce yourself.
BD: I wish a lot of luck and Health to the staff and listeners of Radio «Chiriklo». I am working as an editor of the Romano radio of Belgrade. Radio in Serbia.
ZK: How do you see the role of a Roma radio. Why do we do this work? Why we are active in Roma media? What is the goal of a work that we do?
BD: First of all, we are shaping the message that there should be mutual Roma and non-Roma cultural links. It is important for non-Roma who have political and economic power to give to Roma the opportunity to advance in society. And there are a number of problems in such spheres as education, poverty, non-sanitary housing and poor living conditions. Non-Roma should know the problems of Roma and how they can help to Roma in providing the tools for solution.
It is also important to think broadly on how to help our Roma people, especially in the sphere of education, work, social inclusion, accessing better social position and much more. It is also important to have a clear healthy vision on how the relations with Roma community may develop and which opportunities for Roma youth can be provided. We have positive examples of successful Roma personalities in our community.
ZK: What Roma media should do?
BD: In my opinion, Roma media should do the authentic reports, and do so while having Roma staff (producer, music, narrator, etc.). Romani experts in Roma culture should answer the questions on what is Romanipen, what is special in Roma people, how the Roma Court (Criss) functions, why Roma women marry in a such young age, what is Romani religion and ethics and many others.
ZK: Thank you for telling this important information for Roma in Europe, in Ukraine!
BD: These are the questions, which non-Roma are also interested in. And this can help us to make media products which we can produce and sell.
ZK: Branko! What do you think about the question of Romani language?
BD: Romani language should be standartised on a new level. Media can work together with linguistic experts on creating the standards of language. Right now there are faculties in some European university where Romani language is researched and developed, and media can cooperate with such faculties. Especially, because students who study there are potential journalists.
ZK: How do you communicate with people? Which language do you speak at your work? Romani or another language?
BD: Romani program of Radio Belgrade functions for 15 years and broadcasts daily up to 40 minutes in Romani. We make program in two languages: Romani and Serbian. And this program is doing a great work by creating links between Serbian majority and Romani minority.
ZK: Thank you, Branko! We want to make cooperation between our Ukrainian Roma Radio «Chiriklo» and radio of Belgrade in Serbia. We thank you! We wish you Health!
